Trends

40 trends are too many. Here’s how to read them.

Paper strips fanning out across a clean textured surface, representing many directions.

NonProfit PRO’s 40 Nonprofit Trends for 2026 gathers perspectives from across the sector on donor behaviour, technology, storytelling, leadership and more. It’s rich, but like any long trend list, it risks being overwhelming.

What stood out to us

  • Almost everything comes back to trust and relevance. Whether the topic is AI, events, major gifts or monthly giving, a recurring theme is donors wanting to feel known, respected and able to see the difference their support makes.

  • Technology is positioned as a means, not an end. Contributors increasingly talk about tech as a tool to better understand and serve supporters, not a silver bullet.

  • Leadership capacity is a quiet concern. Several trends touch on burnout, decision fatigue and the challenge of steering in a complex environment.

Why this matters for leaders

You can’t – and shouldn’t try to – respond to 40 trends at once. The useful question is which of these intersect meaningfully with your mission, audience and context. Some will be noise for you; a few will be vital.

A practical way to use a piece like this is to read it with your leadership team and ask three questions: which three trends feel most relevant to us right now? What would it actually look like to respond? And what are we willing to stop doing to make space for that?

The value is not in knowing what’s fashionable; it’s in deciding what you will do - and what you won’t.

Without that discipline, trend lists tend to generate anxiety and scatter. With it, they can be a helpful prompt to re-examine whether your current plans really match the world you’re operating in. The value is not in knowing what’s fashionable; it’s in making deliberate choices about what you will do – and what you won’t.
